Whether you're a casual internet surfer, or someone with a lot of free time on hand, you must have spent some time playing around with some online games to kill time or to have some fun. Game publishers are increasingly working to expand their empires, and to attract a larger audience. And with large audiences come opportunities to make money. To that effect, game publishers have been working with AdSense for distribution, download and in-game advertising. And Google sure has recognized a growing advertiser demand to reach highly engaged games audiences, as it has just announced the launch of the TrueView video ad format across its game monetization platforms.
What is TrueView?
With the improved video ad format that is TrueView, Game Publishers can now maximize their monetization opportunities, and provide a much better ad experience for online gamers at the same time.
If you've spent any time around playing online games, you will know how important it is to create a gamer-friendly ad experience. The ad placement in an online game can make or break the gamers' interest. Therefore, it's nothing to be toyed with. The better the experience, the likelier a gamer tends to click through. And that, of course, means more revenue for the publisher.
Now you might already be familiar with the "skippable video ad" format. This is what TrueView is all about. You typically see TrueView video ad format on YouTube, the Ad Exchange, and AdSense for Video. Indeed, this format drives a lot of advertiser demand on these networks.
The same ad format you used to see on videos, is now coming to gaming networks such as AdX, AdSense for Games, and select Mobile Publishers on AdMob.
Whether this new ad format has any actual impact, that is yet to be seen. But so far, the results have been very promising. During the beta version of this feature, it was discovered that the new ad format resulted in far lower abandonment rate, and better monetization as compared to normal instream ads. Which leads us to believe that the TrueView ad format will change game monetization as we know it, and will set the stage for further developments into the area. This is not only good news for game publishers, it is also good news for online gamers, because they won't have to put up with those annoying game ads anymore.
